The fine print, decoded
Uncapped doesn’t always mean unlimited at full speed. Every ISP publishes a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) or Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) — here is what each one actually says, in plain language, with a link to the official policy.

Afrihost Pure Fibre is truly uncapped — no throttling, no shaping and no usage thresholds, no matter how much you download. The only conditions are fair-use ones: the connection is for home use, so you can't resell it or run commercial servers on it. afrihost.com
Openserve Web Connect (Prepaid) speed rules Speed limits after threshold — Regular Openserve packages from Afrihost are unshaped with no limits. Prepaid Web Connect bundles work differently: each 7-day bundle gives you 200GB at full speed (up to 20Mbps), after which the speed drops to 4Mbps until the bundle expires. help.afrihost.com
Vuma Reach conditions Unshaped / Unthrottled — Vuma Reach packages are uncapped, unshaped and unthrottled — same as regular Vumatel. The limits are hardware, not policy: Vumatel installs an all-in-one WiFi device (you can't use your own router) that covers roughly 100m², supports up to 10 connected devices, and can't be extended with WiFi boosters. afrihost.com

Atomic's fibre is uncapped and unshaped, with no throttling, shaping or capping — ever. There are no hidden thresholds: if your usage is exceptionally heavy, Atomic will talk to you about options rather than slow you down. The line is for one home's personal use — no reselling, sharing between properties, or using it as backhaul. atomic.co.za

Axxess uncapped fibre is unshaped and unthrottled, with no usage thresholds — their Acceptable Use Policy states this in as many words. The connection is for home use only (no reselling, servers or WISP use), and Axxess reserves the right to manage users who place an unusually large burden on the network. axxess.co.za
Vuma Reach conditions Unshaped / Unthrottled — Axxess sells Vuma Reach as a separate prepaid product from R199/month. It follows the same unshaped, unthrottled policy as regular Vumatel, but it's a best-effort service: outages of 9 days or less aren't credited, and payments run via Payfast/EasyPay. axxess.co.za
Web Connect conditions Unshaped / Unthrottled — Axxess's entry-level Web Connect (from R299/month) is unshaped with no thresholds, but it's designed for basic household use — not business or heavy users. One Web Connect service per premises, and downgrades are only allowed after 6 months. Regular Openserve packages carry no special conditions. axxess.co.za

Hero Fibre is uncapped and unshaped, with no throttling and no data caps. Herotel's Acceptable Use Policy reserves the right to limit bandwidth in cases of excessive usage or abuse, but no thresholds are published and residential lines simply need to be used for personal (non-commercial) purposes. herotel.com

Telkom has removed the old fair-usage thresholds from its current fibre products: Core, Endless, Stream Connect, Prepaid and third-party network bundles are all uncapped with no FUP and no throttling. The one exception is the entry-level Easy Connect product on Openserve Web Connect. group.telkom.co.za (PDF)
Easy Connect (Web Connect) speed rules Speed limits after threshold — Telkom's budget Easy Connect fibre (Openserve Web Connect areas) carries a fair-usage threshold: 200GB on the 20Mbps package and 300GB on 30Mbps. Once you pass it, your speed drops to 20% of line speed during evening peak hours (18:00–23:00) — light HD streaming still works. Regular Openserve-based Telkom fibre has no FUP and no throttling. group.telkom.co.za (PDF)
MetroFibre: fully unshaped Unshaped / Unthrottled — Telkom's MetroFibre bundles are 100% uncapped and unshaped, with no fair-use policy, no protocol rate-limiting and unlimited international usage. images.telkom.co.za (PDF)

Vox home fibre is unshaped and unthrottled with no fair-use policy on nearly every network — the one exception is Openserve-based packages. Vox's Acceptable Use Policy reserves standard anti-abuse rights (for genuinely excessive or improper usage) but sets no data thresholds. vox.co.za
Openserve exception Fair-use rules apply — Openserve packages are the one exception to Vox's unshaped promise: on this network, Openserve itself may throttle or shape bandwidth-heavy protocols for users whose usage negatively affects other customers. No specific data thresholds are published. vox.co.za

Webafrica doesn't shape your connection — you decide how to use your bandwidth. Vumatel, Frogfoot, Octotel, MetroFibre and Zoom Fibre packages carry no FUP at all. webafrica.co.za
Vuma Reach conditions Unshaped / Unthrottled — Vuma Reach has no fair-usage policy or speed step-downs — and neither do regular Vumatel packages. Reach's limits are hardware: the all-in-one Vumatel WiFi device supports up to 10 devices on 2.4GHz WiFi and can't be swapped for your own router. webafrica.co.za
Getting connected
How long until you’re online, and do you need to buy a router? Side by side, per ISP — straight from each provider’s published info.

Installation time
Most Afrihost fibre installations are completed within about a week, depending on the network in your area. Once the line is in, activation adds roughly 1–5 working days. Afrihost publishes live average lead times per network on their website. afrihost.com
WiFi router
A free-to-use dual-band WiFi router is included with selected networks — typically a Huawei AX3 (WS7100) or WS5200, or a TP-Link EX511, depending on stock. A once-off R249 delivery fee applies, and if you ever cancel, the router is yours to keep. afrihost.com

Installation time
New installations are generally completed within 1–2 weeks, and can be as quick as 2 business days where feasible. Reconnections on an existing line take only 1–2 business days. atomic.co.za
WiFi router
Routers aren't bundled by default — bring your own (any router with a WAN port works) or buy one from Atomic with free next-business-day delivery: Reyee RG-EW1300G (WiFi 5, R799), Reyee RG-EW3000GX (WiFi 6, R970) or Reyee RG-EW7200BE-PRO (WiFi 7, R3,449). atomic.co.za

Installation time
The installation lead time depends on the fibre network in your area. Once the line is installed, the network takes up to 5 days to activate it, and Axxess connects you within 24 hours after that. If your home already has an active line, you're connected shortly after signing up. help.axxess.co.za
WiFi router
A free-to-use WiFi router (valued up to R5,000) is included with selected networks — typically a Tenda AC10 dual-band. The router stays Axxess property (R899 if not returned within 21 days of cancelling) and becomes yours after 36 months of service. Prefer WiFi 6? A TP-Link EX511 can be bought for R999 once-off. help.axxess.co.za

Installation time
Herotel aims to install within 3–5 working days, weather permitting. In busy periods or bad weather it can stretch to 1–2 weeks. herotel.com
WiFi router
Every Herotel fibre installation includes a free-to-use WiFi router for as long as you're a customer (Herotel doesn't publish the specific model). The router remains Herotel property unless you buy it upfront. herotel.com

Installation time
Expect roughly 7–10 working days on average, depending on the network in your area. group.telkom.co.za
WiFi router
Telkom's 12- and 24-month fibre contracts include a router and installation — typically the D-Link DSL-G2562DG (AC1200 with gigabit ports and VoIP). Easy Connect, Stream Connect and Prepaid fibre ship without a router: the WiFi-enabled ONT does the job instead. online.telkom.wds.co

Installation time
Around 14 working days on average, once the fibre network confirms your home is ready to connect. vox.co.za
WiFi router
A free-to-use MikroTik WiFi router is included — couriered to you pre-configured, with no monthly router fee. It remains Vox property and is collected if you cancel. vox.co.za

Installation time
Most installations are completed within 7–21 working days (about 14 on average), plus up to 5 business days for activation after the physical install. Webafrica's 'activation promise' credits your account R999 if selected networks miss their installation window. knowledge.webafrica.co.za
WiFi router
Webafrica's standard free-to-use router is the ZTE H3601P (gigabit wired, shipped pre-configured — just plug it in); some customers receive a Zyxel EMG3525/T50B instead. The router stays Webafrica property: return it within 20 days if you cancel, or be billed its retail value. knowledge.webafrica.co.za
Many people confuse the two — they work together, but they are not the same thing:
WiFi is only the wireless signal inside your house. It comes from your WiFi router and lets your phones, laptops and TVs connect without cables. On its own, WiFi has no internet — the router needs an internet source plugged into it.
Fibre (or LTE / ADSL) is the connection that brings the internet into your house from outside. You pick one of these as the source that feeds your WiFi router:
1. Fibre — a fibre optic cable to your home. Fastest and most reliable.
2. LTE — wireless internet from mobile towers. Good if fibre isn't available.
3. ADSL — the old copper telephone lines, now being phased out.

So when people say "my WiFi is slow", the problem is usually the fibre or LTE connection feeding the router — not the WiFi itself. Use the
fibre coverage map to check if fibre is available at your address.
Fibre internet has two parts:
1. Fibre Network — (Openserve,
Vumatel,
Frogfoot,
MetroFibre or
Octotel)
— there is usually only one fibre network in your area. The network installs and owns the fibre optic cables in the ground.
2. Fibre ISP — (Afrihost,
WebAfrica,
Vox)
— the ISP sells you a fibre package on top of the network.
You cannot pick your fibre network — but you can pick your ISP. Use the
fibre coverage map to check which network is in your area.
Use our fibre coverage map to find out which network (Vumatel, Openserve, Frogfoot, Octotel or MetroFibre) has fibre coverage at your address. Be as exact as possible with your address to get a reliable fibre coverage check.
There is no product called "Telkom WiFi" — you might be thinking of Telkom LTE, which is wireless internet. You can also get Telkom fibre with a WiFi router which gives you wireless connectivity in your home. Telkom sells fibre packages on the Openserve and Vumatel fibre networks.
Yes — fibre is a dedicated physical internet connection, while LTE and WiFi share radio waves with other users. Fibre is much more reliable, consistent and faster than LTE or wireless home internet. Most fibre packages come with a free WiFi router so you still get wireless connectivity inside your home.
You can test your fibre, WiFi or LTE connection speed using a speed test tool. For the most accurate results, connect your device to the WiFi router with a cable. Telkom and MyBroadband also have great Ookla Speedtest portals.
The fibre network (Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot or Octotel) sets the bulk of the pricing. That's why the same ISP (e.g. WebAfrica, Vox) will have different prices for their 20Mbps uncapped package depending on the underlying fibre network. Even if you and your friend are both with the same ISP, you may pay different prices if you're on different fibre networks.
For Netflix, Showmax or Amazon Prime streaming you only need about 5Mbps to stream in HD quality. We recommend 10Mbps for a household of 1–2 people, then add 5–10Mbps per additional person depending on your budget. It's easy to upgrade your speed later.
Openserve is a fibre network owned by Telkom. Many ISPs sell packages on top of Openserve, including Vox, WebAfrica and Afrihost. Telkom is also an ISP that sells fibre packages for both the Openserve and Vumatel networks.
Installation depends on the fibre network but typically takes 3–10 working days. Costs vary from R1,000–R2,500 depending on your house setup. Most ISPs offer free installation if you commit to a 12-month contract. Some networks also offer express installation for an additional fee.
Check the latest Telkom and Openserve fibre prices on Fibre Tiger — but there are many other ISPs with competitive pricing on the same network. Telkom sells fibre packages for the Openserve and Vumatel networks.
It depends on your priorities — price, speed, or service. Compare all fibre ISPs on Fibre Tiger to find the best deal for your network. Popular choices include Afrihost, Vox and WebAfrica.
Most ISPs will provide you with a WiFi router free of charge. Fibre also requires a Fibre ONT (Openserve, Frogfoot) or Fibre CPE device (Vumatel) in addition to the WiFi router — the ISP will supply both items. You can also use your own WiFi router that has a WAN port, but you may need to reconfigure it.
Price accuracy: We do our best to keep prices up to date, but mistakes and delays can happen. Prices shown are best-effort estimates and should be confirmed with the provider.
Commission: We may earn a small commission on some fibre packages when you sign up. This does not affect rankings or sort order. Packages are sorted by price from lowest to highest.
